New media has opened the doors for many to access informative information. However, this brings the issues with privacy and confidentiality. For example, in the University of Maryland 300,000 personal records of faculty, staff, and students were breached. An outside source was able to gain access to records. These records included names, social security numbers, date of births, and school ID numbers. This has occurred to many universities including Ohio State. If outsiders or hackers are able to access personal information from a college, many would also be able to access it through social media and many more platforms and industries such as hospitals/heath care industries.

Recently I started realizing the threat to privacy with new media. Companies have our data and do not have the proper infrastructure in place to keep our personal information safe. It is very terrifying to know that an unknown individual who most likely has malicious actions has access to 300,000 personal records which most likely includes addresses and financial information.
